Symptoms of Anxiety Have Doubled in the United States Since Start of COVID-19

Kantar Health finds that 46% of patients have cancelled scheduled appointments, leaving healthcare providers to seek other methods to reach Americans

Ahead of World Mental Health day on 10th October, Kantar Health, a leading global healthcare data, analytics and research provider, today announced that symptoms related to anxiety have doubled in the United States since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a significant change in attitudes and behaviors of those impacted.

These findings are from Kantar Health’s National Health and Wellness Survey, the largest patient-reported outcomes survey in the world. Kantar Health revealed these findings in a recent episode of Health Heroes, a podcast series aimed to inform and educate life sciences companies on ways to get closer to patients to help drive improved health outcomes.

A ‘sobering’ mental health situation

Symptoms of anxiety can vary, as some patients reported change in sleep or the inability to care for themselves, while others reported forgoing scheduled appointments with their doctor or skipping doses of their medication.

Prior to the pandemic, America had a shortage in psychologists, psychiatrists, behavioral therapists and counselors. Now, with more Americans reporting symptoms related to anxiety, this gap has only been further exacerbated as mental health professionals struggled to meet the demands of the American public.

As such, there needs to be a workforce readjustment and more resources need to be made available for training of mental health professionals to meet the current and future anticipated challenges.

As a result, this will require a multi-year strategy, leaving a gap in the ability to deliver mental health services in the immediate future. To help in the short-term, it is essential that healthcare providers maintain communication with those that are most vulnerable to mental health issues and ensure that they are getting necessary treatment for their symptoms.

“COVID-19 has shined a glaring light on the inequities, disparities and poor funding of the US public health system,” stated Dr. David Nash of Thomas Jefferson University. “Despite this, I am optimistic about the future of the US health care system as it provides us with a once in a century opportunity to self-reflect and make the appropriate changes needed to make our system better and safer for all Americans.”

Kantar Health found that 46% of patients cancelled or delayed their appointments due to COVID-19, with 26% of those cancelling their appointment due to worries around contracting the virus. This can lead to worsening symptoms of chronic illness and increase mental health issues.

To reach patients who have decided to forego their regular appointments, Kantar Health suggests that doctors need to find ways to maintain regular communication with them, such as through the use of telehealth or in-home care. In order to treat these patients, doctors need to promote a “back to prevention” mindset. In this scenario, doctors encourage their patients to resume preventative measures such as mammograms and screenings along with monitoring of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and hypertension.

Intentional deep breathing exercises are known to reduce feelings of stress. Experts interviewed by ABC News identify box breathing as a type of breath hold specifically used to overcome the type of anxiety people are experiencing during these distressing times.

Box breathing describes the pattern of inhaling slowly and deeply through your nose to the count of four. You inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds and then repeat in four seconds — making a square pattern. Practiced regularly, it has been shown to calm the body by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system — our “rest and digest” responses — which produces feelings of relaxation.

“If you go around that box for a few minutes, you can really get yourself into a much more focused and centered state,” said Dr. John Sharp, a psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School. “We know that when people are stressed, this can work — and like anything, the more you practice it, the more it can work.”

Well-known to the military, box breathing is used in training by Navy SEAL teams to develop emotional discipline. Mark Divine, a former Navy SEAL commander and the New York Times best-selling author of “Unbeatable Mind,” says he has been teaching this method of breathing to Navy SEAL trainees since 2007.

“The best, most effective warriors practice some form of controlled breathing, especially during combat,” said Divine, who explained that box breathing clarifies the mind, which is critical to making good decisions under pressure.

“Not only do you feel calm, but really the quantity of thoughts you have will be lessened,” he said.

And there’s science to back up this technique. One study found participants who performed regular deliberate deep breathing exercises had lower levels of cortisol — a hormone in your body released in response to stress.

“We do it before every meeting in my company,” Divine said. “We do five minutes together as a team. I do it before and after every workout, I do it in my car, I do it anytime that I feel any kind of extra stress or tension. I believe it’s just the single most important thing that everyone can do to take control of their lives internally.”

Anxiety and Weight Gain Running High in California During COVID-19

There’s been a general sense that Americans are feeling more anxious and gaining more weight during the COVID-19 era. Based on a recent survey conducted by Lindora, a leading expert in the weight loss and wellness field, it appears that Southern Californians are carrying more stress and tipping the scales at numbers higher than usual.

The survey looked to gauge the overall well-being of Southern Californians since mid-March, when the state of California first put Stay at Home orders in place.

“We found that the majority of people we surveyed had put on weight since COVID-19 hit, when people were forced to quarantine at home,” said Dr. Amy Lee, Lindora’s Chief Medical Officer.

Of those surveyed, nearly 60% said they had gained weight since mid-March. The average weight gained was between 5 and 9 pounds, but nearly 30% of respondents said they had gained between 10 and 20 pounds (or more) during the short, seven-month period.

Respondents were also asked about their anxiety levels, which can often lead to poor eating habits and excess weight gain. More than 60% of survey respondents said that they have been experiencing higher than usual levels of anxiety and stress.

The survey also found that more than 50% of respondents were exercising less than they were prior to the onset of COVID-19.

“The results of the survey align with what we’re seeing in our clinics,” said Will Righeimer, Lindora’s CEO. “People are struggling to stay healthy right now. We’re seeing an increasingly high number of in-person visits since the start of COVID-19, over 400,000, by new and existing patients who are in need of counseling, products and services in order to stay healthy and get back on track.”

Lindora is an essential health care operation and licensed with the California Medical Board, and treats weight loss patients who are often at higher risk for disease, including those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Respondents of the survey also indicated that getting personal help and attention during this time is important for their journey back to good health. 62% percent of those surveyed said that they felt they would be more successful on a weight loss program if they had day-to-day, in-person accountability. Care home workers suffer Covid trauma, anxiety: study

Nearly half of care home workers in northern Italy may be suffering from post-traumatic stress or anxiety following the first wave of the pandemic, new research showed Wednesday. 

As Covid-19 began its spread throughout Europe, northern regions of Italy — home to a high proportion of elderly people — were at the frontline as intensive care units were inundated with patients.

While much attention was focused on the physical health of first responders and doctors, far less study has been given over to the mental well-being of the nurses, cleaners and caterers at care homes.

Researchers in Italy and Britain conducted an anonymous survey of more than 1,000 care home workers to check their levels of stress and anxiety after months of caring for sick residents.

They found that 43 percent of respondents passed the symptom threshold for anxiety and PTSD.

“Due to the severity of the situation, we were expecting a reasonably high prevalence, but not as high as we found,” Elena Rusconi, from the University of Trento’s Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science, told AFP.

Authors of the research, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, said care home workers had faced exceptionally testing conditions during the first wave.

Unlike emergency health staff, care home workers often form tight bonds with residents, making it all the more emotionally taxing when one gets ill or dies. 

In addition, they had to manage communication with families who were unable to see their loved ones because of the virus.

The workers frequently lacked sufficient personal protective equipment and materiel for hygiene and safety protocols. 

Rusconi said the research showed how governments and society at large often overlook care home workers, especially in times of crisis.  

She said that care work required skill and dedication, yet often went underappreciated.

“They deal with a part of society that we don’t want to think too much about, perhaps from a sense of guilt,” Rusconi said. 

Noting that “many (not all) care home staff in Italy come from abroad,” she added: “Although they may have resided in Italy for a long period and have citizenship, they originally came to take on a job that is, perhaps, considered undesirable and is certainly less esteemed compared to that of hospital doctors and nurses.”

As Europe braces for a resurgence of cases, the authors called for an “urgent in-depth assessment of the psychological status” of all care home workers.
