Broadway Icon Jennifer Holliday’s 60th Birthday Virtual Concert to Support National Affordable Housing Program

As a part of her 60th birthday celebration, Broadway’s Original Dreamgirl has partnered with AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition (BLACC) to produce a 2-hour virtual concert event that will support the Healthy Housing Foundation

In recognition of her 60th birthday, Broadway’s original Dreamgirl, Jennifer Holliday, has partnered with AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and the Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition (BLACC) to produce a 90-minute virtual concert event, scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2020, starting at 8:00pm (EST). Tickets, which can be purchased at stellartickets.com, are $20 and $60 for VIP tickets, which includes a virtual meet & greet. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Healthy Housing Foundation, and their critical work in helping individuals and families move from homelessness to housing and providing truly accessible affordable housing for low-income families.

Joined by a six-piece band, Holliday will perform hits from the musical Dreamgirls, a tribute to her childhood idol, Aretha Franklin, and original songs from her diverse repertoire of recordings. The concert will also feature special messages from an array of celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Mariah Carey, Loretta DeVine, Sheryl Lee Ralph and many more.

“Our country is experiencing an affordable housing crisis at epidemic proportions. The Healthy Housing Foundation is committed to using innovative strategies to not only move individuals and families from homelessness to housing, but to also increase truly affordable housing for our most vulnerable population,” stated Anita Castille, AHF Vice-President, “AHF and the Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition is so pleased to partner with the original Dreamgirl to not only celebrate her 60th birthday, but to have a party with a purpose.”

Most recently seen by audiences from across the globe in her earth-shattering portrayal of Shug Avery in the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple, two-time Tony and Grammy award-winning artist Jennifer Holliday landed her first big role on Broadway in 1979 at age 19, in the production of Your Arms Too Short to Box with God the same day she auditioned for the show. Only two years later, at age 21, she would land the iconic role of Effie White in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which introduced her soul-stirring vocal abilities to audiences across the globe. Having originated the role of Effie, she remained with the show for nearly four years after its December 20, 1981 opening. During this time, Holliday’s sweep of awards included the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, a Grammy Award and Drama Desk and Theater World awards for her acting performance. Since winning the Tony in 1982 for her performance in Dreamgirls—as well as a Grammy for her pop cover of the anthem “And I Am Telling You”—Holliday has gone on to reprise her performance as Effie White numerous times, including on tour and at the Muny in 2012. Over her extraordinary career, spanning four decades, she has performed in the touring company of Sing, Mahalia, Sing, starred

Tim McGraw Awarded the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion for His Support of the Military and Veterans Community

Noel Vasquez/Getty Images

Tim Mcgraw, you never fail to put a smile on our faces, especially now during these exceedingly challenging times. Off the top of our heads, we recall how the country star has comforted us with his poignant commencement speech for this year’s graduates this past May. Then, in July, he surprised health care workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus crisis by dropping in on their video meeting. In August, he performed at a virtual St. Jude festival alongside other country music greats like Keith Urban.

Whether we hear it in his music or see it in his sweet relationship with wife Faith Hill, it’s clear McGraw has a very big heart. Now, the country singer is wowing us again, this time with his dedication to helping the veterans community. As we learned from SoundsLikeNashville.com, McGraw is being honored with the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. The award will be presented to McGraw at the foundation’s Heroes and History Makers virtual event on October 20, at 8 p.m. ET, which will be hosted by Senators Elizabeth and Bob Dole and also include appearances by Tom Hanks, Darius Rucker, and Savannah Guthrie, among other notable celebrities.

Having lost his own father to brain cancer, McGraw acts as the Honorary Chair of the Tug McGraw Foundation, which provides help to those with brain conditions, coming to the aid of many veterans and their caregivers through their work. “We are thrilled to honor Tim McGraw this year. He understands from both his personal experiences, and his support of other caregivers, exactly what our military and veteran caregivers go through on a daily basis,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation in a statement posted on SoundsLikeNashville.com. “Inspired by what he learned from caring for his father, Tim has used his platform as one of our nation’s top entertainers to help the military community find resources for invisible injuries. This continues to be a critical need for caregivers, and an important component of our work at the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.”

Previous recipients of the award are the award’s namesake, Tom Hanks himself, and former First Lady Michelle Obama. If you’d like to learn more or sign up for the event, click here.

BURLINGAME, Calif., Oct. 05, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Corvus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRVS), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, today announced updated data from its ongoing Phase 1 study investigating the potential for CPI-006 to provide a novel immunotherapy approach for patients with COVID-19. The updated data includes 56-day follow-up results from the first two cohorts (0.3 mg/kg and 1.0mg/kg dose) and initial results from the third cohort (3.0 mg/kg) of the study. The 56-day follow-up results showed a dose-response, with higher and more prolonged titers of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the 1.0 mg/kg cohort compared to the 0.3 mg/kg cohort. In addition, the results showed increased levels of memory B cells and memory T cells, and there have been no reports of any drug-related safety issues in any of the 15 patients treated as of September 17, 2020.

These results build on the initial data from the first two cohorts (0.3 mg and 1.0 mg doses) of the study that was published online at medRxiv.org in September 2020. In addition to detailing the initial results, the medRxiv manuscript provides additional details on the unique properties of CPI-006 and on the study rationale and design, along with context on the broad potential for CPI-006 for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.

To-date, the first three cohorts of the study have been enrolled and the final cohort is currently enrolling patients. A new study site, El Centro Regional Medical Center in El Centro, CA, which is affiliated with the U.C. San Diego Health Care Network and serves Imperial and Riverside counties in southern California, has also begun enrolling patients. The Company continues to anticipate that it will complete the study and report results during the fourth quarter of 2020, including a presentation of data at the Society for Immunotherapy of

New health hub for Plymouth city centre with GP surgery, dentist, sexual health clinic and mental health support

Plans for a new health hub in the West End of Plymouth – which would include a sexual health clinic – have been tabled by the council.

Council chiefs say the bold new plan would bring ‘health to the High Street’ and could include a new GP surgery, a dentists’ surgery, a sexual health clinic and mental health support and a pharmacy – all under one roof.

Proposals are being worked up the new, purpose-built health centre on the site of two demolished buildings on the corner of Market Avenue and New George Street, which back onto Colin Campbell Court.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Mark Lowry, who is also city centre champion said: “There are over 12,000 people on the waiting list for dentists, children’s teeth are being extracted, right here in Plymouth. We want to help our residents get healthy, and want to make it as easy for them as possible to access medical or dental support. We are bringing health to the High Street.”

A decision has been signed this week to authorise £1,500,000 to develop the project further and to take it through the design development stage. The total cost of the project could be in the region of nearly £14 million.

Cllr Lowry said: “The location we’re looking at is incredibly convenient. It’s near bus stops and is right in the heart of the city centre, making it incredibly easy for people to pop in.

“Only this week we have taken the dated Western Approach bridge down and I know people want to know what’s next for the West End – well, this is one of the ideas we have been working on.

“This project is about this council looking at a huge difficult problem for its residents and working with partners to come up with an answer. This also ties in neatly with our economic recovery programme Resurgam – rebuilding our city better and more equal, creating opportunities for jobs as well as helping our residents.”

Councillor Kate Taylor, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, added: “We know that the health of our residents is generally not as good as the rest of England and within Plymouth, people live, on average, eight years longer in our better-off wards than they do in the poorer ones. That’s a shocking statistic.

“We are particularly keen to see more dental facilities at this location. We all know about the difficulties families face trying to find an NHS dentist.

“We are taking proactive measures to provide the site, the building and the can-do attitude and are making a concerted effort to ease pressure on our hard-pressed hospital and health staff by preventing ill health in the first place within our communities.”

Last-ditch life support system saving COVID-19 patients, study shows

A life support technique called ECMO has saved the lives of many critically ill COVID-19 patients, a new study shows.

The ECMO — extracorporeal membrane oxygenation — machine takes over the function of the lungs and heart. Blood is pumped from the body into equipment that adds oxygen to the blood before it’s returned to the body.

This technique has saved lives in previous epidemics of lung-damaging viruses, but small studies published early in the coronavirus pandemic questioned its effectiveness.

This international study included 1,035 COVID-19 patients at high risk of death because ventilators and other types of care couldn’t support their lungs.

After being placed on ECMO, the death rate among these patients was less than 40%, according to the study authors.

“These results from hospitals experienced in providing ECMO are similar to past reports of ECMO-supported patients, with other forms of acute respiratory distress syndrome or viral pneumonia,” said co-author Dr. Ryan Barbaro, of the University of Michigan.

“The results support recommendations to consider ECMO in COVID-19 if the ventilator is failing. We hope these findings help hospitals make decisions about this resource-intensive option,” Barbaro said in a university news release.

Most centers in this study did not need to use ECMO for COVID-19 very often, said study co-author Graeme MacLaren, of the National University Health System in Singapore.

“By bringing data from over 200 international centers together into the same study, [it] has deepened our knowledge about the use of ECMO for COVID-19 in a way that would be impossible for individual centers to learn on their own,” MacLaren said in the release.

While the study reveals that ECMO can save the lives of COVID-19 patients who show signs of requiring advanced life support, it should be provided at hospitals with experienced ECMO teams, the researchers said. Hospitals shouldn’t try to add ECMO capability in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, they added.

The results were published recently in The Lancet medical journal.

Three Major Challenges Impacting the Healthcare M&A Space During the COVID-19 Crisis (Graphic: Business Wire)

The global healthcare sector has witnessed challenging times due to the COVID-19 pandemic in recent times. Healthcare institutions, medical professionals, and healthcare company boards are attempting to cope with the pandemic’s startling changes. The healthcare M&A space was similarly impacted, and healthcare mergers have reduced substantially in the second quarter of 2020. As the world works towards recovery, healthcare companies need to understand the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on healthcare M&A and accordingly prepare for the future. Therefore, in their recent article, Infiniti’s M&A support experts discuss the biggest challenges of COVID-19 in the healthcare space, and two minor factors positively impacting the recovering healthcare M&A space.

“While investor support has increased due to the increasing need for healthcare globally, social and political unrest, struggling economies and volatility in financial markets are testing the healthcare industry. Healthcare M&A may be one of the most effective solutions to this crisis,” says an M&A support expert at Infiniti Research.

Speak to our industry experts to gain data-driven insights on the implications of COVID-19 in the healthcare industry, and strategize for the post-COVID era.

Infiniti’s experts identified the following three major challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in healthcare M&A:

  • Nationwide lockdowns and limitations for governing bodies have led to delays in acquiring regulatory clearance.

  • The impact of COVID-19 on healthcare M&A participants will change the valuation of both the buyer and seller.

  • Due to renewed safety and hygiene protocols, and social distancing has made it challenging for companies to conduct thorough due diligence, and delayed third-party approvals.

Gain comprehensive insights into the impact and solutions of these major challenges by reading the complete article here.
