31 states have growing rates of new Covid-19 cases, and ‘we know what’s coming next’

Once again, most of the country is in trouble.

As of Monday, 31 states have reported more new Covid-19 cases this past week compared to the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

And nine states reported record-high Covid-19 hospitalizations on Sunday, according to the Covid Tracking Project: Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

“These are extremely alarming trends, and there should be warning bells going off around the country,” emergency medicine physician Dr. Leana Wen said.

“Some will say, ‘Well look, we are having increasing numbers of cases because we’re testing more.’ But we also know that in more than 15 states, the test positivity rate is over 10% — which means that we’re not doing nearly enough testing.”

On top of that, many people have no idea where they caught the virus.

“Many parts of the country are reporting that 50% or more of their cases cannot be traced back to any single infectious source — which also means that there is a high level of community spread,” Wen said.

“We know what’s coming next … we’re going to get increasing numbers of hospitalizations,” she said.

“Hospitals could again become overwhelmed. And then we’re not just talking about patients with coronavirus who might be in trouble. It’s also about other patients who might be coming in for heart attacks and strokes and car accidents who may find a situation that’s really untenable.”

The states headed in the wrong direction

Five states are grappling with a 50% increase in new cases this past week compared to the previous week: Montana, New Mexico, Tennessee, North Carolina and Vermont.

Another 26 states had increases between 10% and 50%: Arkansas, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Only three states — Maine, Texas and Washington — had fewer new cases compared to the previous week. The remaining 16 states are relatively steady.

No one is off the hook — not even states that have improved

Several states, especially in the Northeast, have enjoyed much better success at fighting coronavirus after implementing strict and innovative ways to limit the virus’ spread.

But those residents can’t let their guard down, White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said.

Take something as mundane as an extra blood vessel in our arms, which going by current trends could be common place within just a few generations.

Researchers from Flinders University and the University of Adelaide in Australia have noticed an artery that temporarily runs down the center of our forearms while we’re still in the womb isn’t vanishing as often as it used to.

That means there are more adults than ever running around with what amounts to be an extra channel of vascular tissue flowing under their wrist.

“Since the 18th century, anatomists have been studying the prevalence of this artery in adults, and our study shows it’s clearly increasing,” says Flinders University anatomist Teghan Lucas.

“The prevalence was around 10 percent in people born in the mid-1880s compared to 30 percent in those born in the late 20th century, so that’s a significant increase in a fairly short period of time, when it comes to evolution.”

The median artery forms fairly early in development in all humans, transporting blood down the center of our arms to feed our growing hands.

At around 8 weeks, it usually regresses, leaving the task to two other vessels – the radial (which we can feel when we take a person’s pulse) and the ulnar arteries.

Anatomists have known for some time that this withering away of the median artery isn’t a guarantee. In some cases, it hangs around for another month or so.

Sometimes we’re born with it still pumping away, feeding either just the forearm, or in some cases the hand as well.

To compare the prevalence of this persistent blood channel, Lucas and colleagues Maciej Henneberg and Jaliya Kumaratilake from the University of Adelaide examined 80 limbs from cadavers, all donated by Australians of European descent.

The donors raged from 51 to 101 on passing, which means they were nearly all born in the first half of the 20th century.

Noting down how often they found a chunky median artery capable of carrying a good supply of blood, they compared the figures with records dug out of a literature search, taking into account tallies that could over-represent the vessel’s appearance.

The fact the artery seems to be three times as common in adults today as it was more than a century ago is a startling find that suggests natural selection is favoring those who hold onto this extra bit of bloody supply.

“This increase could have resulted from mutations of genes involved in median artery development or health problems in mothers during pregnancy, or both actually,” says Lucas.

We might imagine having a persistent median artery could give dextrous fingers or strong forearms a dependable boost of blood long after we’re born.

“[COVID-19] comes on top of what you already thought was a worst-case scenario and it’s compounded, exacerbated problems around the world. … It is literally horrific,” Beasley told ABC News Prime host Linsey Davis.

At the beginning of this year, 135 million people already faced starvation from manmade conflict and climate extremes, Beasley said. Now, 270 million people are on the brink of starvation.

The award comes with the equivalent of a $1.1 million U.S. cash prize and a gold medal to be handed out at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway, on Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel’s death.

Beasley told ABC News Prime that the award money and government funding is critical in sustaining the program’s global effort in 2021.

“The economies of the world’s strongest nations on Earth are struggling. We are not going to have the money we need next year. And not only are the resources going to go down, but the needs are going to be going up,” said Beasley.

“We have 18,000 men and women that are out there in the field putting their lives on the line, every day, in war, conflict zones. You name it,” Beasley told ABC News.

He is currently working with the organization in Nigeria, a country that faces a threat from extremist terrorist groups and climate change.

Doctors may soon kill cancer tumors with less invasive side effects of radiation treatment. This is after a team of experts designed a scanner that can time the antimatter particles that are significant in detecting the levels of the oxygen concentration in cancer tissues. For years, medical experts have witnessed how low levels of oxygen prevented the timely killing of rapidly growing cancer cells. 

A team of Japanese atomic physicists and nuclear medicine experts designed a timer that can detect the oxygen concentration of tissues growing throughout ta cancer patient’s body. Specifically, the timer permits the positron emission tomography (PET) scanners to know when to attack the cancer cells in their weakest before they can grow to be more aggressive. 

In a study published in Communications Physics, the team of experts from the University of Tokyo and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Japan explained that positrons are the positively charged antimatter particles that are extremely low in mass. With how tiny their sizes are, these antimatter particles pose no risk in medical applications. They produce gamma rays that have shorter wavelengths than the electromagnetic waves from X-rays.

“We imagine targeting more intense radiation treatment to the aggressive, low-oxygen concentration areas of a tumor and targeting lower-intensity treatment to other areas of the same tumor to give patients better outcomes and fewer side effects,” Dr. Miwako Takahashi, a nuclear medicine physician from NIRS and co-author of the research, said in a press release.

Detecting the amount of oxygen flow in body tissues could tell doctors when to attack the cancer cells. At present conditions, experts are only able to detect tumors when they already have low levels of oxygen which means they have already developed into a hardened lump of tissues or mass.  

Hence, low oxygen levels in tumors indicate that the cells are already aggressive and have become harder to kill. At this stage as well, cancer cells grow to be more resilient against radiation treatment. 

The experts hoped that in less than a decade, their findings could lead to better and less invasive cancer treatments that could also be available economically.
